Obesity triples in one generation!
When I was at school there was one fat kid in the class, now the normal ones are in the minority!
Obesity is now a worse health crisis than smoking
Obesity isn’t just a cosmetic concern. It’s a medical problem that increases the risk of other diseases and health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers.
Is this the true elephant in the room?!
We spend £10bn per year in the UK treating type II diabetes, most of which could be managed by diet, but we don’t seem to be able to tackle the source of the problem. Worried by the influence of the food lobby one of our recent prime ministers (Billy Bunter himself) fought against taxing sugary foods.
Are health crises actually business models now?
Sadly the poor and children are the biggest sufferers here. Ultimately I see a diminished life ahead for these children beset by health concerns and from an economic perspective a productivity decline because people will just not be upto the job!
Don’t worry I am not some sort of exercise fascist because my very strong belief is that the obesity crises is caused by poor (processed) food. Processed food usually includes the holy trinity of sugar, fat and salt packed in to give flavour to such an extent that the food will barely decompose.
Imagine that we eat food that even the microbes won’t!
We are a very long way off solving this crisis and we won’t get close to it whilst we continue to ignore the biggest elephant in the room. There is no easy solution I know.
What do you think the answer is?
