What do investors want to know about our IP?
Investors want to know that there are barriers to someone else easily copying your business and running off with your success.
Just having thought through how you can defend your competitive advantage; your unique differentiators and your ‘secret sauce’ will help.
Moats, castle walls, barbicans, draw bridges etc all help prevent the invaders from reaching your crown jewels especially if they are held securely in the tower!
The smart investors will be interested in more than whether you have patents and trademarks. They will want to know about Ts&Cs in contracts; brand and brand protections; how you innovate and protect that innovation; what data you have, how it is held and who owns it; what key software you OWN and whether it is open sourced.
The smarter investors will ask questions about your trade secrets as these can be one of your most valuable IP rights.
