The most valuable trade secret leaked – Google search algorithm

Well part of it.

It is incredible how much value has been generated by the Google search algorithm since it was first coded in 1996.

HOW DO YOU PROTECT IT?
Clearly you do not want to publish the search algorithm as this would enable others to copy it. Patents are also not the answer as they require publication (you could likely have patented this in 1996). Patents also only last for 20 years so the patent would have expired 8 years ago in 2016.

TRADE SECRETS
Trade Secrets have long protected the Google search algorithm.

Exactly how Google ranks websites has long been a mystery, pieced together by journalists, researchers, and people working in search engine optimization (SEO).

Google’s search algorithm is perhaps the most important system on the internet, dictating what sites thrive and flop and what content web looks like.

INSIDER THREAT
There has recently been a leak by a disgruntled employee who quote ‘wanted to counter the “lies” that Google had shared about how the search algorithm works’.

Google has confirmed the leak of thousands of internal documents that outline how the company collects user data to rank web pages.

SEARCH ALGORITHM
The leak is just part of the code of a highly complex system, it will however give momentary insights into how it works and will enable SEO gurus to get a lead. The code will continue to develop and move beyond this.

WAS DAMAGE DONE?
Yes, but probably more to the reputation of Google than impact on search and advertising business.
There will now be a post mortem at Google where systems and processes are checked, and the employee no doubt identified.

If leaks occur in the most tech savvy companies in the world they are happening in your business.
The answer: happy, motivated, trained and contracted employees.
