Counterfeit football shirts are big business
But for who?
The football clubs charge a fortune to use their brand logo. The recent Adidas deal has them paying £900m over 10 years to Manchester United.
To recoup costs manufacturers put the prices up and up until the pips squeak. It is just that the pips have not really squeaked as yet. Or have they?
It is estimated that the legitimate UK football shirt market is worth £480m per year with the counterfeit UK football shirt market worth £180m a year.
The real issue is 10m genuine shirts are sold and 16m counterfeit or fake shirts are sold!
So who is scoring the goals in this game?
The issue is organised crime and terrorism are the ultimate beneficiary of these counterfeit sales, that is the real cost to society.
The clubs need to take a VAR and review their tactics.
By the way: “Anyone found to be wearing a fake shirt inside Hillsborough could be asked to leave, with information passed on to the relevant parties”.
