Switzerland to ban EVs to save energy!
Just as Delhi considers banning petrol and diesel cars to reduce pollution and the UK opens a new coalmine!
Not a good example of joined up thinking to solve a supranational problem
A ban on electric vehicles sounds counter-intuitive but makes sense when you realise that during winter months when the hydro electric sources freeze over in Switzerland they have to import gas from their neighbours. I am sure the Swiss EV owners will feel aggrieved as they pay twice to save the planet!
This energy crisis shows the cracks in our strategies and opens debate about whether EVs offer the solution for sustainable transportation.
Electric vehicles are currently being touted by some as a one-stop solution for every country to reach net zero by 2070. At the moment the future of mobility depends one each country, its geography, local and energy resources and this is not joined up nor is it likely to be in times of energy and economic crisis.
Hybrid engines would appear to be the best answer in Switzerland today and I guess this will set back sales of EVs in Switzerland if not elsewhere – but for how long?
Switzerland is clamping down on electric vehicles to save energy and India is going after fossil fuel cars to reduce pollution, at the same time as the UK is coal mining for the steel industry. Just what is going on?
There are other technologies being developed of course. Innovation and business intellectual property will play its part of course.
What do you think the answer to future of sustainable transportation is?
