What is due diligence?

Would you hire a head of cyber security who had links to the KGB ? 

Such due diligence is usually quite a serious and thorough exercise.  

However, it appears due diligence may be more of a laughing matter (or not!) to the Germans:

It took a comedian, Jan Böhmermann, to reveal that the German Head of Cyber Security was connected to the KGB! 

‘Arne Schönbohm, the president of the German Federal Office for Cyber Security, was released from his duties with immediate effect on Tuesday, the news magazine Der Spiegel reported, citing security sources.’

Surely due diligence should be more serious?!
