Why does intellectual property matter and do investors care?

Last week I heard the Head of Intellectual Property at a Nasdaq $4.3bn business talk about what they look for when making their 4 x a year acquisitions:

“When we see organised, readily available lists for the different intellectual property rights, it is a good indication that due diligence will be straight forward. Not just for the Intellectual Property but for the business in general.”

When seeking investment a good cataloguing system capturing all intellectual property such as patents, trademarks, designs, copyright, trade secrets, NDAs etc. makes good sense as it is a good indicator of the Intellectual Property protection available to defend the business from copycats and theft.
